Political Activism by Firefighters

I’m sorry that Richard Alarcon, president of Orange City Fire Fighters, felt my Jan. 21 column, regarding police and fire associations’ campaign activities in city council elections, was mean-spirited. But Alarcon does not represent the views of all firefighters, as I have received many phone calls from firemen throughout Orange County who said, “Right on.” And for the record, police and fire backing is not a criteria I use in deciding whom to personally make contributions to. Candidates who have police/fire support have received my contributions as well as those candidates not supported by them.
