‘Star Wars’ Redux

* Re “Bad Reason to Rush Missile Plan,” editorial, Feb. 7: If I were a foreign military foe of the United States, I would be delighted to see us pursue the “Star Wars” initiative. The only stellar attribute of such a program will be the financial black hole created, not to mention the brain drain from other more viable military projects.
Oh yeah, it doesn’t work, either. In the last two tests the “kill vehicle” failed to intercept a metallic weather balloon the size of Burbank launched from an atoll in the South Pacific. Doesn’t bode well for tracking and destroying hundreds of multiple independent reentry vehicles mixed in with as many dummy warheads. I’m more concerned about the small nuclear device in a steamer trunk or speedboat visiting a major U.S. city.
