Grant Pulls Upset at Gardena, 75-61

Krystal Clay had 27 points and seven rebounds to lead Grant High to a 75-61 upset of No. 5-seeded and host Gardena in the first round of the City Championship girls’ basketball playoffs Friday night.
Deja Cruz had 20 points and Alexis Weatherspoon finished with 15 points, eight rebounds, eight steals and six assists for No. 12-seeded Grant (18-8), which plays Wednesday at No. 4-seeded Taft.
The Lancers trailed, 34-33, at halftime before outscoring the Panthers, 20-13, in the third quarter and opening up a 20-point fourth-quarter lead.
In other first-round games:
Taft 82, Wilson 61--Taft scored the first 10 points of the second quarter en route to a 44-14 halftime lead that propelled the host Toreadors (21-1) to a victory.
Schquay Brignac scored 19 points and had 12 rebounds for Taft. Christina Aguinaga, who sprained an ankle late in the game, added 15 points and reserve Beonka Henderson had 14 points.
Carson 66, North Hollywood 44--Richelle Sherman had 19 points and 12 rebounds, but the Huskies were unable to overcome early foul trouble at Carson.
Kapresha Price had 12 points for North Hollywood (16-10), which pulled to within five points midway through the third quarter before being outscored, 12-0. Zipporah Chase had 24 points for Carson.
Narbonne 103, Monroe 30--Kelly Nakano scored 11 points for the Valley Mission League-champion Vikings (14-7), who were no match for the defending national champion Gauchos at Narbonne.

Granada Hills 74, Manual Arts 57--Kelly Beckler had 25 points and six assists for the Highlanders in a victory at Granada Hills.
Ashika Lakhan scored 17 points and Kelly Patterson had 14 points and eight rebounds for Granada Hills (14-12).
El Camino Real 58, Franklin 43--Karen Shun scored 14 points, Jennifer Goodman had 12 rebounds for the Conquistadores (15-7) at El Camino Real. Victoria Wong added 10 points.
Sylmar 39, Eagle Rock 34--Elese Talevara had 14 points and Janette Hererra had nine points for the host Spartans.
