Kirk Saarloos pitched a one-hit shutout and Kyle Boyer and Aaron Rifkin hit home runs as Cal State Fullerton shut out Brigham Young, 5-0, Saturday afternoon in a nonconference baseball game at Goodwin Field.
Saarloos retired the first 23 batters before Kainoa Obrey singled to right with two outs in the eighth inning for the Cougars (7-6).
Saarloos struck out 11 and didn’t walk a batter, pitching his second shutout in a row. Saarloos now has pitched 20 consecutive scoreless innings.
In another nonconference game:
Chapman 9, Cal Lutheran 5--Mike Caira had three hits and two RBIs, Brian Menkin drove in two runs and Eric Hayden pitched two innings of one-hit relief to get his first save for host Chapman (3-3).
In Golden State Athletic Conference baseball:
Concordia 5-1, Azusa Pacific 4-7 (second game 7, darkness)--Nick Swanson’s run-scoring double in the eighth inning drove in the winning run for the Eagles (5-3-1) in the first game.
Vanguard 3-4, Biola 1-12--Anthony Walker pitched a six-hitter for Vanguard in the opening game, striking out six and walking one.
In Golden State Athletic Conference men’s basketball:
Biola 70, Vanguard 61--Dennis Keane scored 16 points and Brandon Cablay and Shawn Cockery had 13 each for Vanguard (7-20, 3-13).
In Golden State Athletic Conference women’s basketball:
Vanguard 79, Biola 47--Becky Huddle had 17 points, seven rebounds and six assists to help Vanguard (15-10, 8-8) break a four-game losing streak.
In nonconference softball:
Vanguard 8-1, Cal Lutheran 0-5--In the first game of the doubleheader, host Vanguard (2-4) scored six times in the second inning to support Gina Liebengood’s 10-strikeout performance.
