Irvine Leads Way for La Canada

Eric Irvine scored two goals and assisted on the other two to lead top-seeded La Canada past La Salle, 4-0, in the second round of the Southern Section Division IV boys’ soccer playoffs Wednesday at La Salle.

The Spartans (21-0-1) will play Bishop Montgomery in Friday’s quarterfinals. The site will be determined by a coin flip.

Irvine has 26 goals and 14 assists. His first score gave La Canada a 1-0 halftime lead. Lonnie Dietz and Bassam Khan also scored. La Canada held La Salle (12-8-3) to three shots on goal.

In other Division IV games:

St. Francis 2, Northwood 0--Austin Cyr scored on a penalty kick in the 50th minute and Ryan Shaw added a goal with 10 minutes left for the visiting Knights (20-5).

Crespi 2, Paraclete 0--Taylor Canel scored on an assist by Mitchell Reyes in the 44th minute and Andrew Wright added a goal with six minutes left for the Celts (19-5-1) at Crespi.

Notre Dame 8, Bishop Amat 3--Kevin Murray scored four goals and Jimmy Sharp added three in a game at Bishop Amat.

Murray and Sharp each scored twice in the first half for the Knights (15-8-1).

DIVISION I

Millikan 1, Channel Islands 1--The Raiders’ upset bid fell short when the No. 2-seeded Rams won, 4-2, on penalty kicks in a second-round game at Channel Islands.

DIVISION II

Nogales 1, Royal 0--Rony Vincet scored on a throw-in with 30 seconds remaining in the first half of the second-round game at Royal.

The No. 5-seeded Highlanders (23-4-3) failed to convert three first-half scoring opportunities.

Royal goalkeeper Rafael Calderon played the second half, making his first appearance since sustaining a broken shoulder in December, and had three saves against the No. 8-seeded Nobles (19-3-3).

DIVISION V

Flintridge Prep 4, Brentwood 0--Dominic Capaldi had a goal and assist at Flintridge Prep (8-10-5). Ben Watt had 11 saves for the Rebels.
