2 Men Survive Plunge Off Overpass

Two 19-year-old men were hospitalized Friday after their tricked-out racing car plunged off a freeway transition road in Glendale and landed on its roof on a connector road 50 feet below, the California Highway Patrol reported.

Witnesses to the 11:33 a.m. crash on the interchange of the Foothill and Glendale freeways said the highly modified Honda Civic was traveling at about 120 mph when it spun out of control, slammed through a guardrail and went airborne over the side of the freeway, according to the CHP.

“I saw the car come straight down,” said Dennis Clark, who was parked in a shopping center lot above the connector road. “We could see the two people in the car were moving, which is amazing because the car was flat.”

The men--whose names have not yet been released--were trapped inside and had to be extricated.

The driver had moderate injuries, including a broken nose. His passenger, who was pinned under the dashboard, suffered a broken neck. Both were taken to Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena where they were listed in stable condition.
