Five Ventura County high school seniors have received scholarships funded by colleges and universities, the National Merit Scholarship Corp. announced this week.
The winners were finalists who did not win National Merit scholarships, larger financial awards that were given out May 2. To be eligible for the college-funded award, students had to have listed one of the sponsor institutions as their first college choice.
The winners in Ventura County are Elizabeth Chin of Newbury Park High School, UC Berkeley; Jeremy M. Murphy of Oak Park High School, UCLA; Alanna Krause of Nordhoff High School, Northwestern University; Jessica Loring of Westlake High School, UCLA, and Justin Skidmore of Thousand Oaks High School, Brigham Young University.
The scholarships range from $500 to $2,000 and are renewable for four years.
Additional winners of college-financed merit scholarships will be announced in July.
