S. Vierny; Filmmaker Worked With Resnais, Greenaway, Bunuel

Sacha Vierny, 81, gifted French cinematographer known for his work with light, died May 15 in Paris.
Born near Paris of Russian immigrants, Vierny taught school and studied to become a veterinarian before he was admitted to the national film academy. He befriended fellow student Alain Resnais and later worked with him on several important films--”Hiroshima mon amour,” “Last Year at Marienbad,” “Muriel” and “L’Amour a mort” among others.
Vierny also worked with directors Raoul Ruiz, Peter Greenaway, Chris Marker and Luis Bunuel.
Equally adept at color or black and white, Vierny helped Greenaway translate painting techniques on screen in such films as “The Belly of an Architect,” “Drowning by Numbers,” “Prospero’s Books” and “The Pillow Book.”
The cinematographer’s final film was “The Man Who Cried,” starring Johnny Depp and Christina Ricci.
