YEAR: Senior
SEASON AT A GLANCE: Lovell broke 48 seconds in the 400 meters a state-high eight times this season. His best of 47.03 gave him his second consecutive City Section title, ranked second on the yearly state list and fourth on the all-time region list.
WEEK AT A GLANCE: Lovell won the 400 in 47.51 and ran a 46.4 anchor leg on the second-place 1,600 relay team in the state championships at Hughes Stadium in Sacramento on Saturday. Lovell became the second Cleveland athlete to win a state title and the first since Brent Tubb won his second consecutive mile championship in 1971. It came three weeks after Lovell strained his left hamstring during the anchor leg of the 400 relay in the West Valley League finals.
GIRLS
Allyson Felix
SCHOOL: L.A. Baptist
SPORT: Track and field
YEAR: Sophomore
SEASON AT A GLANCE: Felix won her second consecutive Southern Section Division IV titles in the 100 and 200 meters. Her bests of 11.53 and 23.31 ranked second and third, respectively, on the yearly state lists. She ranks third on the all-time region list in the 100 and fourth in the 200.
WEEK AT A GLANCE: Felix won the 100 in 11.61 and finished second in the 200 in a wind-aided 23.27 in the state championships at Hughes Stadium in Sacramento on Saturday. She became L.A. Baptist’s first state champion and the first sophomore to win the 100 since Marion Jones of Rio Mesa in 1991.
