Carvin Withdraws from International Swim Meet

Olympic silver medalist Chad Carvin withdrew from the Tyr Swim Meet of Champions Thursday in Mission Viejo and is scheduled to have four wisdom teeth removed today.

Carvin, who first posted the best time Thursday in the men’s 800-meter freestyle, was supposed to compete in at least 10 other events during the four-day international meet at the Marguerite Recreation Center. His time in the 800 was 8:05.41, about four seconds off the meet record.

“That was a solid swim for me because the last 24 hours have been really tough,” Carvin said.

Carvin decided to pull out after he sought emergency treatment Thursday morning for a toothache that kept him up the night before. He plans to be ready for next month’s World Championship in Japan.

In the only other event Thursday, Rachael Komisarz of Lakeside, Ky., finished the women’s 800 freestyle with the best time, 8:47.42.

Bill Rose, coach of the host Mission Viejo Nadadores, will also miss the meet to attend a funeral in Iceland for his mother-in-law.
