150-Foot Tower OKd for Building in Hollywood

Despite complaints from Hollywood hillside residents who fear that their views will be blocked, the Los Angeles City Council on Friday voted 11 to 0 to approve plans to build a 150-foot ad tower on the new Academy Awards building on Hollywood Boulevard.
The tower is part of the extensive signage at the $615-million development, which will include a retail and entertainment complex and a new theater that will become the home for the annual Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences ceremony.
Many residents and businesses have welcomed the project, at Hollywood Boulevard and Highland Avenue near Mann’s Chinese Theatre. But others say the proposal for 13 large signs will create the look of New York’s Times Square, cluttering the skyline with big, bright ads.
