An estimated 200,000 baby seals are likely to starve to death this spring in the White Sea, a Russian scientist said.
Vladimir Potelov of the sea mammal lab at the Polar Institute of Fish and Oceanography in Arkhangelsk, about 600 miles north of Moscow, said strong winds had prevented newborn Greenland seals from migrating to better feeding grounds in the Barents Sea.
Potelov said local officials don’t have the resources to organize an evacuation.
