Re “Riordan Issues Challenge to His Successor, May 11: The mayor has challenged his successor to match his record of achievement. How should we evaluate Mayor Richard Riordan’s record when so many parts of the city want to secede? The truth is that the delivery of basic city services remains a major problem. Overcoming the dissatisfaction citizens feel toward government will be a major undertaking. If the next mayor can assess and fix what’s wrong with getting trees trimmed, potholes fixed, parks maintained, traffic unsnarled, etc., that will be a real legacy. Then people will know they live a city that works.
