The Los Angeles City Council on Wednesday approved spending $1.6 million to settle five lawsuits involving a variety of personal injury and civil rights claims.
The council agreed to give $900,000 to an 81-year-old man who was hit by a police car at a concert at MacArthur Park. The man, who suffered bone fractures in his leg, foot and hand, is now confined to a wheelchair.
A 78-year-old San Fernando Valley man, meanwhile, was granted $280,000 for injuries he sustained after he tripped and fell on a cracked Ventura Boulevard sidewalk.
And a man whose leg was broken by police during an LAPD arrest was given $183,000. A jury also found that the LAPD held the man in jail too long.
