Discussion on Recycling of Radioactive Metals
- Share via
The Department of Energy will hold a public hearing Tuesday night in Simi Valley to discuss a Bush administration proposal to lift a ban on recycling mildly radioactive scrap metal from former nuclear testing sites.
The meeting will be held at 8 p.m. at City Hall, 2929 Tapo Canyon Road.
In years past, one source of such scrap metal was Rocketdyne’s Santa Susana Field Laboratory, where testing was conducted during the Cold War.
The Energy Department suspended the release of scrap metals from its nuclear weapons facilities in July 2000, hoping to improve screening so that no metal with detectable levels of radioactivity would find its way into consumer goods manufactured with recycled metals.
