Nix’s Goal Lifts Newport Harbor, 1-0

Kaley Nix scored on an assist from Athena Vasquez one minute into the game as visiting Newport Beach Newport Harbor defeated Huntington Beach Marina, 1-0, in a first-place showdown in Sunset League field hockey on Tuesday. Amanda Wittman’s five saves provided her 14th shutout for Newport Harbor (14-2-1, 10-1). Marina dropped to 9-2 in league.
In girls’ volleyball:
Los Alamitos defeated Anaheim Esperanza, 15-7, 15-13, 15-9--Meghan Goria had 13 kills, and Laura Kroneberger added 12 digs as host Los Alamitos (7-2, 4-1) upset Esperanza (9-2, 4-1), 10th in The Times top 10, in a Sunset League match.
In girls’ tennis:
Granada Hills 6, Cleveland 1--In the key match in the City Section’s West Valley League, unbeaten Christine Dao won, 8-1, as Granada Hills (8-0, 5-0) won for the 39th time in 40 matches.
Newport Harbor 10, Aliso Viejo Aliso Niguel 8--Sea View League favorite Newport Harbor (9-5, 5-0), ranked eighth by The Times, scraped past Aliso Niguel (4-5, 2-3) behind sisters Carmen and Diana Khoury, who defeated Laura Devendorf and Katrina Johnson, 7-5, in No. 1 doubles.
In boys’ water polo:
Villa Park 10, Newport Harbor 9--Josh Cashuk scored his fourth goal with 1:39 remaining to lift Villa Park (17-7)--ranked seventh in Southern Section Division I--to a nonleague victory against sixth-ranked Newport Harbor (9-8). Ross Pulver added three goals.
