Anthrax Scare Holds Up Children’s Donations

Children’s letters to the White House containing money for Afghan humanitarian relief are stalled at a remote mail facility where anthrax spores were found earlier this week, the White House said.
The White House has received 266,000 letters containing a total of $500,000 since Oct. 11, when President Bush called for children to send in $1 each to help Afghan children, White House spokeswoman Claire Buchan said.
“This is a temporary situation which will hopefully be resolved quickly,” Buchan said.
Children are still encouraged to send donations, she said.
