Greenwood Returns as Coach at Verbum Dei

David Greenwood, who guided the Verbum Dei High boys’ basketball team to state Division IV titles in 1998 and ‘99, has returned to coach at his alma mater after a two-year absence, Athletic Director Lew Stueck said.
Verbum Dei was 54-12 in two seasons under Greenwood, the 1975 Southern Section player of the year who played at UCLA and in the NBA.
“He had a desire to be involved again and we are just very happy and fortunate that he is coming back home,” Stueck said.
Greenwood said he has spent much of the last two years working with his daughter, Tiffany, an all-section basketball player at La Puente Bishop Amat who will be a senior this season.
Greenwood said he decided to return to Verbum Dei because the program has struggled the last two seasons.
“We’re going to try and put it back together a little bit,” Greenwood said. “I’m determined not to let the program go downhill. And not only the basketball program, but the academic foundation as well.
“Hopefully, my coaching staff can make a difference.”
