Reynolds Fits in 49ers’ Plan

Long Beach State turned to Larry Reynolds as its men’s basketball coach, a man who has a glowing record in NCAA Division II and has established ties to the Southern California recruiting scene.
Reynolds was introduced to the media and 49er supporters Monday at the Pyramid. He signed a five-year contract with an annual base salary of $165,000 along with incentives that can push the deal to nearly $200,000.
Reynolds, 48, led Cal State San Bernardino to a 110-35 record, three California Collegiate Athletic Assn. championships and two Elite Eight berths in five seasons. San Bernardino finished a program-best 28-2 this season, losing in the national quarterfinals.
He spent 16 years as an assistant at UC Riverside and two at San Francisco.
“I think Long Beach State should be in the race for the [Big West] conference title and get into the NCAA tournament or the NIT year in and year out,” Reynolds said.
Long Beach State Athletic Director Bill Shumard had sought an experienced head coach.
