Hearn Hints About Retiring in 2003

Chick Hearn says that for the first time he is seriously thinking about retirement, hinting Friday that he might call it a career after next season.
“I hope to go one more year,” he said, “and then we’ll see what happens.”
Hearn, off the air since heart surgery Dec. 19 and now recovering from hip surgery, intends to return to his announcing duties Tuesday, when the Lakers play host to the Utah Jazz.
Hearn said he will not take calls from fans on KLAC’s “Laker Line” call-in show.
“At least not for the remainder of this year,” he said.
Hearn’s thinking regarding retirement came to light during taping of an in-depth interview with KLAC’s Larry Burnett for his “Laker Zone” pregame show. The first segment aired Friday.
Hearn, 85, had worked 3,338 consecutive Laker games, dating to 1965, before the streak was broken by the heart surgery.
He suffered a broken hip when he fell at a service station Feb. 17.
