Dean Kuipers’ comments on Cornelius and Puffy AmiYumi (“Made in Japan,” March 31) offers Times readers a salutary first taste of the extraordinary eclectic musical banquet characteristic of today’s Japanese pop scene.
Let’s hope that future Calendar articles introduce other Japanese singers like Hikaru Utada (currently enrolled at Columbia University), Toshinobu Kubota and UA--each of whom has synthesized a wide range of musical influences (jazz, R&B;, Brazilian samba, etc.) to create songs that deserve a wider American audience.
