Bishop Should Demand That Cardinals Resign

Re “Bishop Responds to Sex Abuse Scandal,” April 20:
If Orange County Bishop Tod D. Brown believes in healing, cleansing and a humble, holier church, he could start by demanding the resignation of Catholic cardinals, from Bernard Law to Roger M. Mahony, who covered up cases of sexual abuse.
That kind of advocacy would require integrity, morality and decisive action, something lacking in Catholic leaders who hide in the safe harbor of committee meetings and hand-wringing. The cover-ups and evasions by church leaders have disgraced the Catholic Church and its people, yet the bishops continue to act as victims of unfortunate circumstances. It took anguished victims and secular authorities to uncover the scandals they hid in their Byzantine bureaucracy.
