Golden Gate Bridge Worker Falls to Death

A construction worker died after falling from the Golden Gate Bridge on Tuesday, according to Mary Currie, spokeswoman for the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District.
The 42-year-old man fell about 9:15 a.m., landing on the ground at the south end of the bridge, Currie said. He was working on the bridge’s earthquake retrofitting.
Currie said she believed it to be the first work-related death on the bridge since the early 1970s. Several agencies, and Shimmick Obayashi Joint Venture, the Hayward company contracted to do the $122-million retrofit, are conducting an investigation.
