Richard Clarke, 72; Chairman and CEO of Pacific Gas & Electric

Richard Alan Clarke, 72, a former chairman and chief executive of Pacific Gas & Electric Co., died Nov. 14 at his home in San Rafael from complications of Lou Gehrig’s disease.
Clarke led the company from 1986 through 1995, and continued to serve as a board member of both PG&E; Co. and PG&E; Corp. until 2001. He established the utility as an internationally recognized leader in the energy industry, particularly in the areas of environmental stewardship and energy conservation.
The San Francisco native received a bachelor’s degree in political science from UC Berkeley in 1952 and his law degree from its Boalt Hall School of Law in 1955.
