Foot-and-Mouth Disease Eliminated, Officials Say

Britain declared itself free of foot-and-mouth disease, more than 10 months after the start of a devastating outbreak of the livestock illness.
The Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs said the last remaining at-risk area, Northumberland in northeastern England, would officially be declared free of the disease at midnight Monday.
Since the outbreak was detected near London in February, Britain had 2,030 confirmed cases of the disease.
More than 4 million animals were slaughtered to curb the disease, which afflicts cloven-footed animals but rarely affects humans.
