An Unanswered Question of Freedom

“Army’s Reality Game Takes a Deadly Turn” (Feb. 27) left a larger question unanswered. What traffic violation allowed Deputy Randall Butler to pull over the pickup truck in which Lt. Tallas Tomeny was riding? Is it against some law to be a redneck--”each [driver and two passengers] unshaven and wearing blue jeans and flannel shirts”?
The prior week Officer J.D. Garner pulled over a truck towing a canvas-covered trailer. I missed the traffic violation that prompted that story.
What we have here is that cops can pull over anyone for no reason, with impunity, as condoned by judges up to and including the Supreme Court. We are no longer “secure in our persons, houses, papers and effects against unreasonable searches and seizures.”
What happened? Our colonial ancestors revolted over offenses such as these.
