Bill to Hike Traffic Fines Near Schools Advances

Both the state Senate and Assembly have passed a measure that would allow Ventura and Santa Barbara counties to double fines for traffic violations in school zones.
The School Zone Pedestrian Safety Bill, written by Assemblywoman Hannah-Beth Jackson (D-Santa Barbara), now awaits consideration by the governor, who has a month to decide whether to sign it.
Jackson’s bill would create a six-year pilot program that would allow the counties to voluntarily opt to participate. Officials in both Ventura and Santa Barbara counties support the measure, Jackson has said.
The idea behind the program is to lessen the number of children injured or killed by traffic violators. The measure passed the Senate by a vote of 27 to 8 and the Assembly 67 to 9.
