Our Guantanamo Bay Concentration Camp

To quote from “Long-Term Mission Likely at Guantanamo Bay Prison” (Sept. 13), “As that crucial work continues, [Navy Capt. Bob] Buehn said he now wonders whether history eventually will remember Guantanamo Bay not as a unique U.S. military base in a communist country, but rather as something more akin to the Nuremberg stockade and trials after World War II.”

No. History will remember it as it was--a concentration camp where people were held without charges and interrogated for months on end, a concentration camp more akin to the Nazi concentration camps. The German people allowed those camps because the humans inside were Jews. We allow these concentration camps to be run with our knowledge, consent and money because they confine “terrorists.” Yet we do not even define what a terrorist is; the definition would be thrown back into our own faces, as we commit the same acts on a wholesale level. We demonize the one whose suffering will cause us gain. History will show this time as one of wanton greed and opportunism. Folks will have to choose between human need and greed.

The detainees should be set free and the criminals in our administration who fabricated this new product, this “war on terrorism,” should be put behind bars. That is the right and just thing to do.
