Mariners Lose Martinez in 11-2 Rout of Rangers

Edgar Martinez had a rough day while playing a big part in Seattle’s 11-2 victory Sunday over the Texas Rangers at Arlington, Texas.
Now the Mariners will have to play without their 40-year-old designated hitter for a few days.
Martinez hit a two-out solo home run in the first inning that put the Mariners ahead to stay. He later was hit by a pitch and scored, then left after straining his left hamstring while beating out an infield hit.
Martinez will be out three to five days with what the team called a mild strain. He will sit out Seattle’s first home series against the Angels, which starts Tuesday.
“It puts a damper on this day, as much as he means to this team,” said Manager Bob Melvin, who has won three of four since an 0-2 start.
Dan Wilson hit a run-scoring single in the second inning on the first pitch he saw this season as the Mariners jumped on Chan Ho Park.
Seattle led, 4-0, when Park (0-2) was pulled after Ichiro Suzuki’s leadoff single in the fourth. The Mariners scored in each of the first three innings.
Park has pitched only 5 2/3 innings in his two starts, giving up 10 runs and 11 hits.
It is the first time Park has started 0-2 in his eight-year career. It is also the first time he has had consecutive starts that went three innings or fewer.
New York 10, Tampa Bay 5 -- Roger Clemens got his 295th victory and Alfonso Soriano and Nick Johnson opened the game with homers for the Yankees, who concluded a season-opening trip at 5-1.
Clemens (2-0) gave up four runs and six hits in seven innings. After limiting the Devil Rays to a run and three hits through six innings, the six-time Cy Young Award winner gave up a three-run homer to Javier Valentin in the seventh.
Chicago 10, Detroit 2 -- Magglio Ordonez hit a three-run homer to cap a nine-run eighth inning at Chicago.
The Tigers are off to an 0-6 start for the second consecutive season, this time under first-year Manager Alan Trammell.
Miguel Olivo drew a bases-loaded walk to push across the go-ahead run in the inning, D’Angelo Jimenez had a two-run double and Josh Paul had a two-run single.
Six of the runs were charged to knuckleballer Steve Sparks, although none were earned because his error helped the White Sox start the rally.
Toronto 8, Minnesota 1 -- Carlos Delgado homered and drove in four runs and Cory Lidle pitched seven strong innings to help the Blue Jays complete a three-game sweep at Minneapolis.
Delgado hit a two-run homer in the first inning and had a two-run single during a four-run third. He was five for nine and drove in six runs in the final two games of the series.
Boston 12, Baltimore 2 -- Shea Hillenbrand homered, doubled twice and had a career-high six runs batted in.
By winning two of three from Baltimore and going 3-1 at Tampa Bay, Boston has won its first two road series for only the fifth time in franchise history.
The Red Sox scored eight runs against Rodrigo Lopez (0-1), who went 4-0 with a 2.48 earned-run average against them last season. He gave up nine hits and three walks in 4 2/3 innings.
Cleveland at Kansas City -- The game was rained out. No make-up date was announced. It was the Royals’ 60th home rainout in their history and the 23rd in April.
