Another Name for Mom

After reading Marci Crestani’s essay (“Occupation: Queen-of-All-Trades,” Metropolis, Nov. 16), I thought about an appropriate title for a woman who gives up a career to stay at home and raise her children. What better title than Chief Domestic Officer, or CDO? Running a family is much like running a corporation.

Has Crestani never heard of the word “homemaker”? As a CPA, I like the connotation so much that I put it on clients’ tax returns as the occupation for the nonworking spouse. No one has ever questioned it or complained!

As I was checking my son’s English homework the other night, I finally came across a moniker that seems to fit. He was writing about a “Brave Warrior” but mistakenly had typed “Brave Worrier.” Then it hit me--finally an honorable name for what I do. I will henceforth put “Brave Worrier” in the box marked “occupation,” and when asked who my employer is I’ll answer with pride, “My children.”

The perfect job description for Crestani is simply “Mother Who Cares.” There is no more important job in the land.
