Mid-Level Retailers Victim to Demographics

It is curious that “Midsection in a Squeeze” (Dec. 16) focused only on the department stores losing sales to discounters and high-end retailers.
Stores that traditionally have catered to middle-income shoppers are losing business because the middle class is shrinking.
MTA mechanics, grocery store clerks and thousands of others who are at risk of losing medical coverage for their families will no longer be shopping at Kohl’s or Mervyn’s.
