Simple Doesn’t Cut It

Commenting on your Feb. 2 editorial “Don’t Mortgage the Future,” Dennis Martin (letter, Feb. 6) suggested an “across the board” cut of 10% from each federal department. So the directors who over-budget and waste resources feel scant pain from the reduction; they only lose some fat. The directors who operate frugally, having no fat to lose, must donate blood.
There is your cause for bloated bureaucracy -- simplistic solutions to complex problems. Too often imposed, I fear, by unthinking citizens via their pet politicians.
