Slain Premier’s Ally Proposed as Successor

The party of slain Serbian Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic proposed reformist ally Zoran Zivkovic as his successor, as the government announced that police hunting for the gangsters believed to have ordered Wednesday’s killing have detained more than 300 people and seized large amounts of weapons and drugs.

It said four of them had been granted protected witness status and that their statements had confirmed suspicions that the gang allegedly behind the killing was connected also to a Colombian drug cartel, the first time it mentioned such a link.
