Train Derailment Sends Chemical Cloud Into Sky

A freight train derailment sent an unknown substance into the air Sunday night, but after the cloud dissipated authorities lifted a warning that local residents should stay indoors.
As many as 16 cars of the Union Pacific train derailed about 8:30 p.m. in this small town northeast of San Francisco.
California Highway Patrol Officer Timothy Willock said the train’s conductor identified the leaking substance as anhydrous ammonia, which is dangerous if inhaled. But the substance dissipated within two hours, prompting authorities to cancel the “shelter-in-place” warning.
