Churches Disagree Over U.S. Aid for Buildings

WASHINGTON — An array of church organizations took opposing sides before Congress this week over a Bush administration proposal to give religious groups that provide social services more access to federal funds.
The proposal, made by the Bush administration in January, is to allow religious groups to apply for federal aid to erect or renovate buildings where religious activities are held, so long as social services are also provided in the buildings.
The hearing on the proposal was the first by the House Financial Services Housing Subcommittee.
