President Bush Pushes His Tax Cut Plan

I should know better than to read the paper before breakfast. President Bush wants to cut the dividend tax because it is a form of “double taxation” (May 6). Corporations do not pay their fair share of taxes, and to pretend that they do is a baldfaced lie. Adding insult to injury is for Bush to disingenuously suggest that “capitalism must have honesty in the boardrooms of American corporations.” Barf! He needs to tell that to his buddy Ken Lay. Yeah, Enron was a job-creation bonanza!

It always amazes me when I read letters from the have-nots expressing their disdain for any tax cuts for the haves (May 3). I was once a have-not, as were most haves. But instead of hating the haves, I decided to join them. And now, after years of hard work, I have become one of the upper 5% who get to pay 50% of the total taxes in this country. If there is one truly outrageous aspect of our tax system, it’s that so many Americans, mostly lower-income, pay absolutely no federal taxes, despite availing themselves of government benefits paid for by the rest of us.

Bush’s economic recovery plan amounts to taking out a loan and giving the money away to rich people. How anyone could think that it would do any good is beyond belief.

It suddenly occurred to me. The Democrats don’t want an economic recovery.

The push for tax cuts is nonsense. The economy will be stimulated when another revolutionary product is invented and the masses desire and buy it. It was stimulated in the past with new products -- copiers, the fax machine, the personal computer, cell phones and, of course, the Internet. The market is saturated with all of the above. Inventors, hurry up, we need you.
