In Indian Wells, I rode my mountain bike up Highway 74 from Palm Desert to Thomas Mountain, descended the Ramona Trail and took the highway back. The Ramona Trail afforded great views of the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park and Mt. San Jacinto. The next day, I took the highway to Santa Rosa Mountain Road and up to Toro Peak. This takes you from the desert at 110-foot elevation to an alpine environment at 8,700 feet. I didn’t see a soul on the off-road sections. The springs are waterless -- bring more than you think you’ll need.
