The Army is conducting an investigation into the disappearance of a California man who vanished while he was driving through a violence-plagued region of Iraq known as the Sunni Triangle, a newspaper reported Tuesday.
The car of Kirk von Ackermann, 37, of Moss Beach was found Oct. 9, abandoned along a road between Tikrit and Kirkuk with his satellite phone, a laptop computer and a briefcase containing about $40,000, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.
Ackermann is employed by Ultra Services, a company based in Istanbul that furnishes supplies and logistics assistance for U.S. Army bases in Iraq.
