A man whose body was found in the Channel Islands Harbor this week was identified Wednesday by the Ventura County coroner’s office as Kevin Cunningham, 49, a live-aboard at the harbor.
The case is being investigated by the Sheriff’s Department as an accidental drowning, but an autopsy is being conducted to determine the cause of death, said Craig Stevens, deputy county coroner.
Cunningham was last seen about 10:30 p.m. Sunday on his dinghy heading toward his sailboat in the harbor.
He had just visited friends on another boat.
The dinghy was found empty in the harbor Monday, and Cunningham’s jacket was found floating on the water nearby.
A sheriff’s dive team was dispatched to the area around Cunningham’s sailboat and found his body submerged in water about 15 feet away.
