A season pass to the Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area, one of Southern California’s most popular off-roading areas, will cost $90 starting next month, up from $30.
The U.S. Bureau of Land Management announced that the hike is needed to cover the costs of increased law enforcement and visitors services for a growing number of users. As of Oct. 1, the cost of a weekly pass will rise to $25, up from $10.
The recreation area, which is 160,000 acres in eastern Imperial County, draws 1 million visitors a year. Crowds of 200,000 converge on the dunes during holiday weekends.
