Import of Canadian Beef Resumes

The United States has imported its first shipment of Canadian beef since trade was suspended in May because of a confirmed case of “mad cow” disease in Alberta, a U.S. Customs official said.
About 39,000 pounds of Canadian veal were imported through Buffalo, N.Y., a U.S. Customs spokeswoman said.
Relaxing the ban will allow Canada to resume about 40% of normal beef trade, U.S. agriculture officials have estimated.
A large surge in Canadian beef imports was not expected, industry experts said.
