Grenades Injure 3 Amid Elections in Kashmir

Grenade attacks by suspected Islamic militants wounded three people in the Indian-controlled portion of Kashmir, marring parliamentary elections that saw 21% of eligible voters show up at polling stations. Sporadic violence throughout the state may have helped keep the voter turnout low.
More than a dozen rebel groups have been fighting since 1989 for the Himalayan region’s independence or its merger with mostly Muslim Pakistan. The rebels, who called for a boycott of the polls, say elections solidify India’s control over the region.
