Port Trails Long Beach, L.A. in Cargo Volume

The city’s seaport is falling behind its Southern California rivals in the competition to capture West Coast cargo business.
An analysis of the Port of Oakland’s operations shows that total shipments of filled containers passing through Oakland were up just 0.8% in the first four months of 2004, compared with the same four months in 2003.
But in contrast, Long Beach’s container business was up 15.4% during the first four months of this year compared with 2003, while Los Angeles was up 7%.
