The most impressive 2-year-old winner so far this year in California was Chandtrue.
A son of Yes It’s True out of the Crafty Prospector mare Chandelle, Chandtrue broke into the game with a 4 1/2-length victory in a rapid 50 4/5 seconds for 4 1/2 furlongs at Hollywood Park on April 29.
The 13-10 choice that afternoon, Chandtrue could be an even shorter price today when he tries to become a stakes winner against seven others in the $75,000 Willard Proctor Memorial.
Owned by Harold Greene and trained by Bob Hess Jr., Chandtrue, who was purchased for $130,000 at Keeneland last September, will again be ridden by Corey Nakatani and they will break from post seven in the five-furlong Proctor.
Four of Chandtrue’s opponents are also fresh off victories. Cover Now broke his maiden going two furlongs at Turf Paradise, Zero Call won at the same distance at 59-1 odds last month at Santa Anita, Rythm River beat maiden claimers on April 25 at Hollywood Park and Black Wager won a two-furlong race at Golden Gate Fields in March.
Race of the day: Celtic Sky, who won the 2002 Kingston Handicap and was second in the race last year, is back for in the $100,000 turf race today at Belmont Park. Trained by Christophe Clement for Waterville Lake Stable, Celtic Sky will be ridden by Jose Santos in the 1 1/8-mile race for New York-breds.
One for the road: Points West had a troubled trip when third at Keeneland and returns to a Belmont Park track she likes in today’s seventh, a $48,000 allowance at 1 1/16 miles. Javier Castellano will ride the 4-year-old West By West filly, who has a victory and two seconds in three previous starts over the track.
Exotically speaking: A pick all using Titan Baseball in the first, El Cordoves in the second, Cyber Slew and Brocky’s Dream in the third, Hot Contest, Uncle Jack and Johnny Show in the fourth, Carla Rose and Anima Mundi in the fifth, Cee Mister B, Flag To Fly and Soy Taipan in the sixth, Reel ‘Em In in the seventh, Chandtrue in the eighth and Ancient Treasures in the ninth.
