A Huntington Beach man was shot by police Tuesday after throwing a hammer at them from his estranged wife’s apartment, authorities said.
John Underhill was taken to UCI Medical Center; his condition was not immediately known, police Lt. Gary Meza said. The shooting occurred about 1 p.m. in the 200 block of Rochester Avenue after police were called to enforce a restraining order prohibiting Underhill from contacting his wife, Meza said.
“He was at the top of the stairs when he threw the hammer at officers standing at the bottom,” he said. “One of them fired, striking him in the body.”
