Monterey Pine Disease Presents Fire Hazard

A fast-spreading disease is infecting Monterey pines throughout Marin County, leaving behind dead and dying trees that present a fire hazard and cost thousands of dollars to remove.
Pine pitch canker, which spread to the San Francisco Bay Area after appearing along the Monterey Peninsula two decades ago, arrived in Marin about five years ago.
Fire officials are asking residents to watch out for the disease because dying Monterey pines present a safety and fire hazard.
