Six of us backpacked into the Mono Pass area of Yosemite under cloudless blue skies Sept. 17. That night we huddled sleepless in our tents while the first storm of the winter season nearly blew us away. We woke up to snow flurries and hiked out, abandoning our climb of Koip Peak. The next day the ranger said they received 2 inches of snow and closed Tioga Road (Hwy. 120) for the night from Tuolumne Meadows to Lee Vining.
