James A. Rawley, 89; Expert on Civil War and Race Relations

James A. Rawley, 89, a nationally known expert on race relations, died Tuesday in Lincoln, Neb., after suffering a stroke.
Rawley was an authority on the Civil War, Reconstruction and the history of race relations. The Organization of American Historians created the Rawley Prize for accomplished historians in the area of race relations to honor him.
An educator and author, Rawley wrote “The Transatlantic Slave Trade: A History” and “Turning Points of the Civil War.”
