Richard Sandbrook, 59; Founding Member of Friends of the Earth

Richard Sandbrook, 59, an advocate of sustainable development and one of the founding members of the environmental group Friends of the Earth, died Sunday in England after a short illness, said Tim Smit, chief executive of the Eden Project, a facility in southwest England that features exhibits of plants and flowers in their native growing conditions. Sandbrook was affiliated with the project.
Since 2002, Sandbrook also worked on a United Nations project that helped large companies put capital and expertise to work for the world’s poor.
He served as an advisor to pop star and anti-poverty campaigner Bob Geldof and Prince Charles, an ardent organic farmer, among others.
Born in Bath, England, Sandbrook studied biology at East Anglia University. He trained as an accountant with Arthur Andersen but gave it up to pursue environmental causes.
