IRA Changes Its Mind on Offer to Disarm

The Irish Republican Army withdrew its offer to disarm, releasing a statement that sternly rejected British and Irish government criticisms that the outlawed group was committing major crimes and was primarily to blame for an impasse in the peace process. However, the IRA pledged to stick to its 1997 cease-fire.
Hope of progress has dimmed since the IRA was accused of being behind the Dec. 20 robbery of the Northern Bank in Belfast, Northern Ireland. A gang took hostages and stole nearly $50 million in the biggest cash robbery in history. The IRA has repeatedly denied involvement.
